The history of the M62 that was designated in Hungary as "Szergej" began with the world first locomotive from Luhansk (M62 001) in 1965. 288 more locomotives of this type would follow in time. In spite of some start-up problems the series quickly conquered the entire diesel rail network of Hungary. The prototype locomotive M62 001 still exists in the MAV historic railway park.
