Il gruppo V 180 della Deutsche Reichsbahn della DDR era la più grande locomotiva diesel costruita nella DDR. Inizialmente venne costruita in una versione a quattro assi con due carrelli a due assi; in seguito vennero realizzate anche versioni a sei assi. Il ridotto carico assiale di 15,6 t nella versione a sei assi è considerato ancor oggi un capolavoro ingegneristico, consentendo l'impiego universale di questa locomotiva anche su diramazioni. Inoltre, è omologata anche per pendii ripidi. Il potenziale campo di applicazione che ne risulta è unico tra le grandi locomotive diesel tedesche.
