Come prova, la Deutsche Reichsbahn nell'ex RDT ha inizialmente equipaggiato tre esemplari del Gruppo110 con un motore diesel da 1.200 CV nel 1972, che si è dimostrato eccellente anche nel servizio di treni espressi. Come altri componenti, l'azionamento dinamico fu adattato di conseguenza. Tra il 1981 e il 1990, ulteriori conversioni (circa 500 locomotive) a 1.200 CV (883 kW) sono state eseguite a Raw Stendal utilizzando i 12 motori KVD 18/21 AL-4 e AL-5. Queste locomotive sono state designate come Gruppo 112.
