Le locomotive a vapore, dette "Jumbo" per la loro potenza di traino, vennero utilizzate con grande successo in quasi tutta la Germania e in molti altri paesi europei. La velocità massima era di 80 km/h in avanti e 50 km/h all'indietro. Alcune di queste macchine già molto potenti registrarono un ulteriore aumento della potenza a 2.100 CV (1.546 kW) sulla Deutsche Bundesbahn quando furono convertite alla combustione di petrolio dal 1955. Dal 1968 le locomotive a petrolio della DB vennero ribattezzate gruppo 043.
