Prototype: With 879 units, the BR E 40/140 is the most frequently built standard electric locomotive of the DB vehicle program. At the beginning of its career it reached a maximum permited speed of 100 km / h and hauled medium freight trains. However, this changed in June 1969 because by then it needed to reach an authorised maximum speed of 110 km / h to make the trains run faster. This way the locomotives could be used more efficiently in the passenger traffic.
