WHAT IF...?
…the next winter is sure to come!
Since the early days of rail transport, clearing snow from the tracks has been a vital task in regions prone to snowfall and drifting. The range of railway service vehicles used for this purpose includes everything from simple snow-clearing plates to large snow ploughs and high-performance rotary snow blowers.
From the 1960s onward, the Deutsche Bundesbahn faced the need to replace its ageing, still steam-powered snow blowers. A number of compact, heavy-duty vehicles equipped with Beilhack diesel snow blower units were tested in the Alps, the Allgäu region, and abroad. However, one drawback of these vehicles was the use of an additional locomotive for feed movement.
To boost efficiency in snow removal, a self-propelled high-performance rotary snow blower was developed. This allowed the DB to handle snow depths of up to 3 meters, making it well-equipped to face even the most unpredictable weather conditions. Despite extensive testing, series production and delivery to the Deutsche Bundesbahn were delayed until the early 1990s.
